Celebrating Be an Actuary Month

Actuaries are essential professionals in the financial world who combine mathematical knowledge, statistical expertise, and business acumen to analyze data and quantify uncertainty. They help organizations make strategic decisions about future risks across various industries—determining insurance premiums, designing pension plans, and evaluating financial investments.

If you weren’t aware, February marks “Be An Actuary Month,” an initiative jointly hosted by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and the Society of Actuaries (SOA). This month highlights the actuarial profession and provides resources for students and career-changers interested in the field.

At Ezra Penland, we’re dedicated to helping actuaries advance their careers by connecting them with opportunities that match their expertise and aspirations. Our experience in actuarial recruitment gives us unique insight into the profession’s demands and rewards. We believe strongly in educating individuals about this fulfilling career path—which is why initiatives like Be An Actuary Month align perfectly with our mission.

What is Be An Actuary Month?

Be An Actuary Month is a joint initiative by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and Society of Actuaries (SOA) designed to promote awareness of the actuarial profession. Throughout February, these organizations host virtual career fairs, webinars, panel discussions, and university outreach programs to connect with students, educators, and career-changers.

The initiative provides resources about examination processes, study materials, and scholarship opportunities, while showcasing the diversity of actuarial roles across industries. By concentrating these efforts into one month, the CAS and SOA create momentum for recruiting talented individuals into this growing profession while offering accessible entry points for those interested in exploring actuarial careers.

Why Consider a Career Path in the Actuarial Field?

The actuarial profession offers a compelling combination of benefits that few other careers can match:

Job Satisfaction and Work-Life Balance

Actuaries consistently report high levels of career satisfaction, ranking among the top professions in work-life balance. The structured nature of the work—often project-based with predictable deadlines—allows for flexible scheduling in many organizations. Many actuaries enjoy regular business hours with limited travel requirements, creating space for personal pursuits and family commitments.

Competitive Salary and Compensation

Actuarial careers offer exceptional financial rewards that increase significantly with experience and exam progression. Entry-level actuarial analysts with 1-2 exams can expect starting salaries well above average for new graduates. As professionals advance through the examination process, compensation typically increases with each passed exam.

Job Security and Growth Potential

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects actuarial positions to grow by 22 percent from 2023 to 2033, outpacing average job growth across all occupations. As data availability expands and new risk categories emerge, actuaries are finding opportunities in emerging fields beyond traditional insurance roles—from climate risk assessment to healthcare analytics and technology startups.

Intellectual Stimulation

For analytically minded individuals, few careers offer the level of intellectual engagement found in actuarial work. The profession demands continuous learning and adaptation to new methodologies. Each project presents unique challenges requiring creative problem-solving and innovative approaches to modeling uncertain future events.

Impact on Business and Society

Actuaries play a crucial role in addressing some of society’s most significant challenges. Their work directly influences how businesses manage risk, how insurance products are designed and priced, how retirement systems function, and how organizations prepare for uncertain future events.
