Our Experience at the Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar in Philadelphia

Our actuarial team had an enriching experience at the Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar in Philadelphia. We attended insightful sessions that provided valuable perspectives on industry evolution, connected with professionals across the casualty actuarial community, and gained a deeper understanding of emerging trends shaping our field.

Keep reading for some highlights from the seminar sessions.

Keynote Address: Leadership in a Changing Industry

Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Andrew M. Mais delivered a compelling keynote emphasizing the actuarial profession’s crucial role in navigating constant industry change. His central message resonated strongly: actuaries must skillfully assess available information, identify gaps, and make informed decisions with the data at hand.

Commissioner Mais highlighted the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ vital role in consumer protection and risk awareness. He stressed that the insurance industry faces increasing coverage needs across all sectors, making establishing trust between insurers and consumers more critical than ever. Consumers must have confidence that their insurers will deliver on their promises when paying premiums.

A particularly striking insight was his reframing of insurance relationships. Rather than viewing insurance as a simple risk transfer, Commissioner Mais advocated for understanding it as risk reduction. He illustrated this concept through California’s wildfire reduction initiatives, which incentivize consumer education about risks and disaster preparedness. This approach recognizes that informed consumers can actively participate in loss prevention, reducing the financial and emotional toll of rebuilding after disasters.

The keynote also addressed artificial intelligence’s growing presence in insurance operations, emphasizing that AI implementations must comply with existing insurance laws and regulations. Commissioner Mais concluded with a powerful reminder about professional growth: actuaries who remain open and willing to change achieve the most tremendous success, as actual growth only occurs when we embrace change rather than relying solely on proven methods.

Innovation in Predictive Analytics: The CSPA Booth Experience

The Certified Specialist in Predictive Analytics (CSPA) and Data Science booth showcased exciting developments in actuarial education and technology. The highlight was their new AI Fast Track Bootcamp & Cohort, designed to enhance actuaries’ efficiency in predictive modeling applications.

During conversations with Alicia Burke, Director of the CAS Institute, we explored AI’s practical applications while discussing the critical importance of regulatory compliance. Burke emphasized correcting a common misconception that AI represents entirely new technology—in reality, it has evolved continuously over years, with insurance applications becoming increasingly sophisticated.

The discussion reinforced that while AI offers tremendous potential for improving actuarial processes, practitioners must ensure all implementations align with insurance laws and regulations. This balance between innovation and compliance remains essential as the profession continues integrating advanced analytical tools.

For those interested in ongoing education about property and casualty insurance, data science, predictive analytics, and AI applications, the CAS offers a podcast called “Almost Nowhere,” which provides valuable insights into these evolving areas of practice.

Exploring Philadelphia

Between sessions, we had the opportunity to explore some of Philadelphia’s iconic landmarks. We were particularly impressed by The Thinker statue at the Rodin Museum, marveled at the historic Budd BB1 Pioneer Aircraft, enjoyed the interactive exhibits at The Franklin Institute, and took a peaceful stroll through the beautiful Rittenhouse Square. The city’s rich history and vibrant culture provided the perfect backdrop for professional development and networking.

Looking Forward

We’re already anticipating future industry events where we can continue these critical conversations and stay current with developments in casualty actuarial science. The seminar reinforced our commitment to embracing change while maintaining the rigorous standards that define our profession.
